Are the new maps just a repeat of Jacobs’ work and extreme RCP 8.5 modelling?
Confused? Frustrated? Feeling blindsided by the new flood hazard maps? You’re not alone.
Many residents are reporting serious inconsistencies:
Received a letter from Council warning of flood risk—yet the maps show no flooding on your property in any scenario?
Not notified by letter—but the maps suddenly label your property at risk?
Historical experience at odds with what the maps now show?
You are not alone, and your concerns are valid.
WHAT YOU CAN DO
Attend a drop-in session – First one is TOMORROW (Saturday, 10 May), 10am–12pm at the Council Chambers. More dates on the Council website.
Talk to Council – Voice your concerns directly.
Email your concerns – We recommend formal correspondence over the “Have Your Say” online survey. Request a personal response.
NOT SURE WHAT TO ASK? START HERE:
- Why are the flood maps being updated? Is this due to legislation, policy, or legal pressure?
- Why wasn’t there transparent, early engagement with the community about this process?
- Why are KCDC and WRC using different models?
- Why did I get a letter warning of risk when the maps show no flooding?
- Why didn’t I get a letter when the maps now show a new flood or ponding risk for my property?
- Why is Council continuing to use extreme climate scenarios like RCP 8.5?
Let’s stand together for transparency, fairness, and evidence-based planning.
Ask questions. Speak up. Be heard.
